When the Earth Had a Moon (Part 1) by A.M. Cunning

The world’s first moon base has been established by MoonX Ltd., a joint venture company with American, Chinese, and Russian governments to promote the peaceful use and development of the moon for all. However, political tensions arise and raise the specter of total annihilation.

A young nuclear physicist, Rex, works on the base to create nuclear fusion using helium-3, but personal tragedy draws his mind away from his work. His fiancée, Avery, the captain of the first manned mission to Mars, has gone missing. Using AI technology, Rex searches for answers to the cause of the loss of the Mars bound ship, but he discovers military secrets instead.

“I picked up this book because I enjoy reading new science fiction authors, and I'm glad that I did. Every chapter is engrossing, whether it's learning about Chinese mythology, nuclear fusion or plot advancement, there is never a dull moment. The characters are wonderfully drawn, with all of their human foibles and all. The story is also timely, in that I imagine there will be a moon base in the near future, and nations will either have to cooperate or compete, and there is a real danger of military activity on the moon.” Amazon reviewer
